fort santiago is also located in the walled city of intramuros, with its high walls measuring 22 meters in high, with a thickness of 8 meters, and an entrance measuring 40 meters high. you can see this fort along pasig river and it was once the premier defence fortress during the spanish era. it was almost destroyed in february 1945 during the battle of manila.
it was only restored in the early 1980's by the intramuros administation and currently houses the well preserved legacies of the spanish goverment. this also serves as a museum to the country's national hero, dr. jose rizal, who was imprisoned within the for before his execution in 1896.
